Blind Mama Cat’s story
This is Mama Cat’s story.
She was rescued by Alla, a Cats In Need volunteer, and later fostered and adopted by her.
Cats In Need volunteers picked them up from a parking lot, where the blind mother was desperately trying to hide with her kittens under cars — a very unsafe environment for them.
It was a miracle that a completely blind cat not only survived on busy streets but also had a litter, with two kittens surviving.
They were very feral, skinny, and covered in ringworm. It took many torture baths to eliminate the nasty fungal infection, and in the process, they developed a forever-hate toward their torturer — me.
I struggled to socialize with these three.
Still, I really enjoyed watching them from a distance, especially the blind mother walking and jumping around the house as if she could see.
Gradually, I began to develop very special feelings for her.
I could never find the perfect name for her, and when she started reacting to me calling her Mama Cat, I made it official.
Over several months of living with me, she doubled in size and looked very healthy except for her eyes.
What was left of them was constantly oozing, causing irritation and inflammation.
Doctors at Animal Mama Veterinary Hospital & Emergency decided to perform enucleation eye surgery.
The surgery went very well, but the doctor’s conclusion about Mama’s blindness was devastating:
“We finished the surgery and Mama is waking up. She was not born like that; it was a trauma, some accident.
If both eyes are involved, I think some human being had to be involved.”
